AT&T’s Cheryl Choy, VP of information and voice products, announced on Friday that the company will be dishing out 1TB of data a month to U-Verse Internet customers with plans zipping along at up to 300 megabits per 2nd starting August 21. The company believes this ought to be enough data to stream more than 13 hours of HD video content daily.
Right now, customers on tiers ranging from 768 kilobits per second (Kbps) to 6 megabits per 2nd (Mbps) get 300GB of data per month, while customers subscribing to tiers ranging from 12Mbps to 75Mbps get 600GB of data usage a month. ATT seems to be trimming down all the tier confusion by offering a brand new single cap for each customer speeding at up to 300Mbps.
If that’s not enough information, AT&T will gladly charge customers if they go over their monthly allowance. For $10, customers can get a measly 50GB of data during the current billing cycle. The maximum monthly overage charge is $100, which equates to out to 500GB of additional data, according to the company.
AT&T is matching Comcast and raising the ceiling of their monthly home web data cap to 1TB. Beginning August 21st, all U-verse clients on speed tiers up to (and such as) 300Mbps will receive the greater monthly allowance. When they somehow still manage to exceed 1TB, they’ll be charged $10 for each additional increment of 50GB.
Currently, customers on U-verse’s lower speed tiers are limited for an allowance of 300GB / month, which means this change gives those users a lot more to work alongside. It’s also nearly twice the 600GB data cap that currently applies to individuals on tiers among 12Mbps and 75Mbps
Hot on the information of Comcast doing the same thing, AT&T is increasing its data cover for U-verse users to 1TB beginning August 21. All U-verse customers on plans as much as 300Mbps will receive the cap increase but those on its GigaPower 1Gbps plans are going to benefit the most as AT&T is decreasing data usage caps and moving to unlimited plans for all those users.
Currently, most U-verse subscribers are subjected to a 300GB or 600GB per month allowance, with a $10 charge for each 50GB they go over. The brand new plan should put most customers safely outside the possibility of that happening.
